How Do I Set Up an Alias and a "Catch All" for email?

On our Windows 2003 servers, you would not have an admin email account for administration purposes and would need to use the Control Panel to administer your email accounts instead. Please see our Windows 2003 Control Panel tutorials here.

An alias is a nickname for a real email account. You use aliases for email addresses of domain pointers with email. You DO NOT have to create the aliases because your mail for the domain pointer will arrive in your primary account mailbox. In other words, mail being sent to user@domainpointer.com will arrive in the mailbox for user@primarydomain.com. If there is no user created by the same name at the primary domain, then the email will go to the "catch-all" account. If there is no user account OR "catch-all" account, then the email will not be received. For example, mail being sent to Tom@domainpointer.com will go to Tom@primarydomain.com

A "Catch All" feature will catch any emails going to a non-existent user, and forward them to a valid email account that has this feature enabled. For instance, if your customer makes a typo, and sends your email to wiliam@yourdomain.com, without the extra "L" in William, this email would ordinarily be bounced back to the sender. A catch-all will ensure that any email sent to your domain will be received, even if the email was sent to a non-existent user. The mail@yourdomain.com has this feature enabled by default, but you can have any user as the "catch-all" account. Note: when this feature is enabled, you may also receive lots of spam in that user's mail account.

To disable the "catch-all" from an email account,

1. Log into the control panel and select Domains.

2. Click on your domain name and scroll down to select the email option (Email Accounts, Email Forwarding, Multi-Recipient Addresses) for your user. Once you select your user, simply click the checkbox beside the "Set as the catch-all account" to disable this feature.

NOTE: You can only have one catch-all account per hosting account.
